Rahul Tripathi is an Indian professional cricketer who has played for the state of Maharashtra (2010–Present) across all 3 formats, as a top-order batsman, in the Indian domestic circuit. In the IPL (Indian Premier League), he has turned out for Rising Pune Supergiants (2017), Rajasthan Royals (2018–2019), and Kolkata Knight Riders (2020–Present). He had come into the spotlight in 2017 when he was acquired by the Rising Pune Supergiants franchise, for INR 10 lakhs, despite mediocre performances throughout his domestic career until then. He had, however, more than repaid the franchise’s faith by scoring 391 runs in 14 matches at an excellent strike rate of 146.44, including a string of 7 30-plus scores in 8 innings, helping the team reach the final of the competition.

He was inspired to take up the sport of cricket by watching his father who had played university cricket as well as junior-level cricket for the state of Uttar Pradesh. However, Rahul’s cricket training was often affected due to his father’s frequent transfers during his stint in the Indian Army. A permanence in his cricket apprenticeship came in 2003 when his father was transferred to Pune and he began training at the Deccan Gymkhana, one of the oldest and most renowned training facilities in the country.
He had achieved the rare feat of hitting 6 sixes in an over in local cricket, on 2 separate occasions.
In 2014, he was awarded the ‘M A Chidambaram Trophy’, presented annually to the best under-25 cricketer in India, by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).
Before the 2017 IPL Auctions, he was not even selected in Maharashtra’s squad for the inter-state T20 tournament, the unofficial audition for IPL hopefuls. Despite this, he was selected by the Rising Pune Supergiants franchise. A month later, he had celebrated his IPL selection by scoring 157 runs in 3 matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (India’s premier domestic one-day cricket competition), including a score of 95 runs against Bengal in the quarter-finals.
Although primarily a batsman, he does turn his arm over on certain occasions and had even recorded a 5-wicket haul in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (India’s premier domestic T20 cricket competition).
He was the leading run-scorer for Maharashtra in the 2018–19 season of the Ranji Trophy (India’s premier domestic first-class cricket competition), accumulating 504 runs in 8 matches.
In February 2022, during the IPL 2022 mega auction, Rahul Tripathi was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping INR 8.5 crore.
In January 2023, Rahul made his T20I debut, which was against Sri Lanka. He got the chance to play after Sanju Samson got injured and was ruled out of the remaining matches of the series.
